About Us » ENL Historical Milestones
In the 1820s, Martial Noël founded the Mon Désert Alma sugar estate, thus pioneering the Noël family’s business on the island. Later, this estate merged with the Alma Sugar Estate to create Mon Désert Alma Co. Ltd.

In 1882, the family invested into a second sugar estate, Savannah. With a backdrop of mergers and acquisitions, ENL was a pioneer in streamlining and modernising the Mauritian sugar industry.

In 1944, ENL (Espitalier Noël Limited) was founded to bring together the main components of the family business. It started to diversify into other business sectors.

In 1969, ENL took its next major step by creating the General Investment & Development Co Ltd (now ENL Commercial), to develop its commercial and manufacturing capacity.

Mon Désert Alma, Savannah Sugar Estates and GIDC were among the first companies to be listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius in 1989.

In recent years, ENL acquired substantial shareholdings in a number of Mauritian blue chip companies.

In 2007, ENL Property was formed.
